Tan Sri Abdul Hadi bin Awang, born 20 October 1947, is a Malaysian politician and religious teacher who has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Barangay since October 1990, the 7th Chairman of the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS), Islamic Political party and part of the National Alliance (PN) coalition since July 2002.
He was the Leader of the Opposition from July 2002 to March 2004, the Terengganu State Minister from December 1999 to March 2004, and a member of the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Ru Rendang from 1986 to 2018 . At the international level, he also serves as Vice-President of the International Federation of Muslim Scholars.
Abdul Hadi Awang was educated at nearby schools, then continued his studies at the Islamic University of Madinah from 1969 to 1973 and later at Al-Azhar University. On his return to Malaysia, he joined the Abu Kadam Islamic Malaysia (ABIM) in 1977 and quickly became the state chief of Terengganu. A year later, he joined the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) and ran for a parliamentary seat in the 1978 general election.

After Fadzil Noor was elected party chairman in 1989, Abdul Hadi quickly rose through the ranks to become PAS vice-chairman. He served as vice president until Fazir died of a heart attack in 2002, and Abdul Hadi Awang succeeded him as PAS chairman.
Andul Hadi Awang was an officer of the Terengganu Islamic Foundation from 1977 to 1978 while also serving as the Terengganu chief of Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM). He collected higher zakat (funds) totaling RM122.4 million between 2000 and 2004, compared to only RM85 million during 1990 to 1999 when he was in power in Umno. In terms of land reform, he reduced land premiums from 20% to 10%, and exceeded his goal of resolving 50,000 land disputes arrears each year.
He established transparency in logging operations, raising the RM60.6 million premium to 15,000 hectares in 2003, compared to RM17.9 million for the same area in 1997 under Umno’s administration. He helped reduce the poverty rate from 17.3% to 14%;
He helped introduce the five-day policy in 1999, which the federal government followed in 2000. He introduced 90 days of maternity leave and seven days of paternity leave. He assisted in the abolition of tricycle permits and fees for small traders, the abolition of tolls on the Sultan Mahmud Bridge and the re-establishment of Islamic law in the state constitution and the introduction of several laws based on the Qur’an and As Law – Sunnah.
