Johansen began his junior hockey career in 2008 with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In his rookie season, he scored 25 points in 71 games and helped the team reach the WHL Finals. He improved significantly the next two seasons, scoring 69 and 92 points respectively, and led the team to the WHL Finals again in 2011.
In the 2010 NHL Draft, Johansen was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the fourth overall pick in the first round.
