Carter Stevens Biography
Stavins was born in Melebourne, London, the son of Ingrid Wickman and Stavros Georgiou. He shares parents with his older sister Anita and younger brother David Gordon.
Stevens was sent to St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Maclean Street, although his mother was Baptist and his father was Greek Orthodox, as it was closer to his father’s place of business in Drury Lane.
The young Stevens developed an interest in the piano and eventually learned chords on the baby grand piano at home because there was no one to teach him.
At the age of 15, inspired by the success of the Beatles, he became interested in the guitar. He got his father to buy his first guitar for £8 (about £200 in 2021), and he started playing it and making music.
At times, he escaped his family obligations and went to the rooftops to listen to musical theater music wafting from Denmark Street, then the center of the British music industry.
Stevens claimed that “West Side Story” had a profound influence on him and provided him with “a different perspective on life”.
He moved with his mother to Gavle, Sweden, where he attended elementary school (Solängsskolan) and began to hone his drawing skills under the influence of his uncle, a painter, Hugo Wickman. He is interested in both music and art. Then they returned to England.

The title track from his 1967 first album, Matthew and Son, reached the top ten in the UK, as did the album itself. Stevens’ albums Tea for the Tillerman (1970) and Teaser and the Firecat (1971) were certified triple platinum in the US.
Released in 1972, his album Catch Bull at Four peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and stayed there for several weeks.

Stevens converted to Islam in December 1977 and changed his name to Yusuf Islam the following year. In 1979, he sold all his instruments at auction and gave up his music career to focus on charitable and educational activities for the Muslim community.
He has since bought back at least one such guitar, thanks to the efforts of his son Yoriyos. He was embroiled in a protracted controversy in 1989 when he spoke out about the death warrant for author Salman Rushdie’s book The Satanic Verses.
He has been awarded two honorary doctorates, the Promotion of Peace Award, and other humanitarian honors.
