American sportscaster David Herbert Wills was born March 13, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
At Oak Lawn Community High School, he also wrote for the student newspaper, where he participated in basketball and baseball.
He attended Elmhurst College, graduating in 1988 with a degree in Speech Communications and Urban Studies, while pitching for the baseball team and working for the school newspaper.
He also worked for SportsPhone, a Chicago-area phone service that provided minute-by-minute sports scores and updates while he was in college.
After graduation, Wells served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the baseball team at Elmhurst College in 1989 and as interim head coach of the University of Chicago baseball team in 1990.
Wells died on March 5, 2023 of a long-term heart attack. Wells was hospitalized in Toronto with a heart problem later determined to be supraventricular tachycardia, and he missed the final two weeks of the Rays’ season in September 2022. He’s back on the air during the 2022 AL wild-card series.

In the Chicago media market, Wills began his on-air broadcasting career covering sports for radio stations WMAQ and WMVP. From 1991 to 1995, he served as the radio voice for the Class A Kane County Cougars, where he landed his first on-air role.
From 1997 to 2004, Wells served as John Looney’s backup and as a pre- and post-game analyst for White Sox radio broadcasts.
During the same period, he co-hosted a daily sports talk radio show, hosted a local cable sports show, hosted Notre Dame basketball and football pre- and post-game radio broadcasts, and contributed to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) basketball team.

The Tampa Bay Rays replaced Paul Alden and Charlie Slovis, the team’s original radio duo, with Wells and Andy Fried before the 2005 season.
