In her 20s, Horton was a librarian for UEB, a large multinational corporation in Auckland.
Horton served as a founding trustee of the Oakland-based Starship Foundation and Friends of Starship. As well as launching the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, she has donated to the SPCA, Salvation Army and Women’s Refuge.
Houghton and her husband Michael created the Mrs Michael and Rosie Houghton Prize at the University of Auckland in 2014 in honor of New Zealand author and journalist Marcia Russell.
In her adopted home in Australia, Horton and her husband have collected more than 300 works of contemporary Aboriginal art. The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney will receive the donated collection.
Holden was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Memorial Medal in 1990. She was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in 1993 as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honors for her volunteer work in the community.
In 2004, she was awarded the Queen’s Order of Service for her volunteer work in the community as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honors.
In 2011, she was awarded a Dame of the Order of New Zealand for her services to charity as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honors.
