A KTM rider of nearly 20 years, Sandi Pitchers Keel has passed away peacefully.
Sandy’s friend shared the devastating news on Twitter,

We regret to inform you that Sandi Pitchers Keel has passed away. The Sandi Pitchers Keel is known for having a friendly personality. After a bizarre bike accident, this daredevil learns she has a rare form of cancer. On December 17, 2021, Sandy’s rider hit the rear of her bike outside Garip Dam while riding beautiful passes in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Sandy gave herself 10 days to recover at her sister’s house in Jeffreys Bay before completing the 3 day trip back to Johannesburg, even though her bike was badly damaged and would cost R38 000 to replace. The injuries to her body also did not appear to be life-threatening. Sandy coughed, vomited and eventually vomited blood all weekend before being rushed to Marlbarton Hospital on January 18, 2022, exactly a month after her accident, which she likes to call “naps”. Sandy was put on a drip, which caused her arm to swell a lot, to help boost her sodium levels.
Doctors gave her intravenous antibiotics to reduce swelling, but this caused anaphylactic shock, which put her life at risk. At Donald Gordon Hospital, Sandi underwent three debridements on the arm where the drip was implanted and also underwent a gastroscopy which revealed a severe infection due to malnutrition. Sandi was admitted to the hospital on February 4, 2022.
Doctors performed multiple blood tests before discovering the cause of Sandy’s symptoms when he was initially admitted to the hospital. It turned out that Sandy had a rare and dangerous form of cancer that had spread from her lungs to her brain, called neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma with paraneoplastic syndrome. Sandi’s diagnosis of neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma with paraneoplastic syndrome — a rare, aggressive disease that originated in lung cancer — gave her pause.

An oncologist told Sandy she had less than a year to live when she was discharged from the hospital on February 18, 2022, and advised her to cross things off her bucket list that she had always wanted Live a full life. Sandi seeks a second opinion because she disagrees with the conclusion and the silver lining it gave her.
Sandy said,

Sandi was cleared for specialized treatment recommended by medical and radiation oncologists and has shown good results after consulting with a cardiologist. Unfortunately, Sandi’s inherited heart disease, Marfan’s syndrome, which affects connective tissue, is at risk from treatment. Sandi will need to be watched closely because radiation therapy may cause further growth of her already enlarged aorta. To treat Sandy’s tumor, medical specialists developed a comprehensive plan that included chemotherapy and 33 consecutive sessions of radiation. Sadly, she passed away after a long battle with cancer.
Aside from the passion and tenacity she showed during the toughest months of her life, she certainly blazed a path for women to enter and enjoy the world of horseback riding and racing, and she did so very successfully.

Sandi has been involved in the motorcycle community for the past 18 years, competing in 1000cc Superbike as well as National Superbike, Enduro, Motocross and some MX races. She even won the legendary KTM 500.
After spending 30 days in the hospital, on February 16, 2022, Sandy, who showed her “rebellious heart”, got up secretly and met her sister Trish who was waiting for the engine in the parking lot. To make wigs for the Cancer Society of South Africa (CANSA), the pair escaped to the IamBrett salon for virtue, not vanity. They decided to change Sandi’s signature platinum bun for a “short and funky” gray one.

“Sandy is a very strong-willed, assertive person. She has a will of steel which is a hallmark of her adventures on horseback. She firmly believes in justice for all and is willing to help anyone if she can. Even though she didn’t have much, she was always the first to put her hand in her pocket and help those in need.”
Sandy said,
“After having long blond hair that many would envy, it is truly my crowning glory. I knew the journey ahead would cost me it, so I figured why waste it when it could be put to good use to help those Cancer patients who need wigs to get through their cancer journey. So it was an easy decision.”
Sandi returned to the hospital in good spirits after letting her hair down at CANSA around the corner in the salon. When she arrived, people’s mouths fell open.
