In 1976, Danforth left Syracuse to become Tulane’s head coach, and Boeheim was named the new head coach of the Orange. He led the Orange to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first six seasons as head coach, and in 1987 led the team to the Final Four for the first time since 1975.

Freshman guard Carmelo Anthony led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds as Syracuse beat the Kansas Jayhawks 81-78 in the title game. In 2018, Boheim was involved in a fatal car accident. He killed a pedestrian walking on the side of the road after his vehicle broke down. Boheim cooperated with authorities and has not been charged with a crime.
