Rich Burnett’s career

At the Antwerp Open in April 1997, Burnett made his PDC debut. In June 1997, Burnett took on PDC World Champion Phil Taylor in a challenge match in Sky Sports’ Clash of Champions at Ringside Tavern.

Burnett played again in the World Match Play in 1999, losing in the first round to future finalist Peter Manley, and again in 2000, reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1997, losing to the eventual champion Phil Taylor.

Burnett has never been able to replicate his level of performance at the PDC World Championships in the PDC World Match Play or BDO.

His only television appearance between 2005 and 2010 was at the British Open, aside from his performance in qualifying for the PDC World Darts Championship in 2007, where he won four matches to reach the televised stage. This led to several years of poor form and a drop in the world rankings.

However, he was defeated by Alex Roy in the first round. Around this time, he was also said to be suffering from gingivitis, which was evident when he lost to Jamie Harvey in the first round of the 2008 British Open.

Burnett briefly took a break from darts in 2009, when it was revealed in September that year that he was in financial difficulty and was on unemployment benefits.

In October 2010, he reached the semifinals of the John McEvoy Golden Dart Classic, but lost to Gary Anderson in a final round tiebreaker. This performance shows that he has improved.

Burnett provided an opening surprise by beating compatriot and sixth seed Mark Webster 3-2 in the first round. In the second round against John Pat, he dropped 9 games in the first 10 rounds and lost 4-1 despite winning the first set.

Burnett defeated James Hubbard and the crowd supporting him in the first round of the 2013 World Championships to take on Andy Hamilton. Burnett won the first set but lost 4-1 after missing five darts with a 2-0 lead.

In the first round of the 2014 World Championships, Burnett defeated Dean Winstanley 3-1. He then beat Andy Hamilton 4-1 to reach the third round for the first time since 2005.

In the World Match Play, Burnett played two one-sided matches, beating Brendan Dolan 10-4 in the first round and losing 13-2 to James Wade in the second round.

In May 2016, Burnett returned to darts and won two Challenge Tour events. At Q School in January 2017, he attempted to regain his tour card status. On day three, he made it after beating Paul Nicholson 5-3 in the final round.

On the 2017 Pro Tour, he reached the round of 32 twice, his best finish. He was unable to secure a spot on the European Tour. Moreover, he was also disqualified from the 2018 World Championships.
