On January 25, 2023, Monique Ryan’s chief of staff, Sally Rugg, filed a lawsuit against Ryan in the Federal Court for “breaching the general protections under the Fair Work Act”. In documents filed with the court proceedings, an affidavit from Rugg alleges that Ryan said she had ambitions “to become prime minister one day,” and that she was “rolling her eyes and saying ‘yes, right, stress leave’ and using her Hand made empty quotes ‘ about Rugg’s sick leave the previous week.

On March 7, 2023, a federal court judge denied Rugg’s interlocutory application to continue working for Ryan.
