In early 2021, she co-founded the Hamilton Camp Support Network with a focus on affordable housing. That same year, Jama attracted media attention when he was arrested in Hamilton while protesting evictions at the city’s homeless encampment. She was charged with obstructing and assaulting a police officer. The charges were later dropped after she signed a peace bond.
In July 2022, after former MP Andrea Horwath resigned to run for mayor, Jama announced she would seek the vacant seat of Hamilton Centre. Jama has been hailed as Ontario’s NDP candidate in October 2022. Jama’s campaign sparked controversy after her description of Israel as an apartheid state resurfaced, leading the Canadian National Unity Party to ask the NDP to drop her candidacy. She later apologized for her remarks.
On March 16, 2023, Jama was elected by a landslide as Hamilton Center MP, receiving 54.28% of the vote.
