Vineeta Singh Early life
Singh was born in 1983 in Anand, Gujarat. Her mother has a Ph.D. and her father, Tej P. Singh, is a biophysicist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Singh completed her schooling in 2001 at RK Puram, Delhi Public School. Entrepreneurship had already attracted her by the time she joined the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) that year, as Ashok Jhunjhunwala recalls from his first meeting with the young student in the foreword to his book The IITM Nexus:
“However, the most important part of this book is the story of Vineeta Singh. When she came to IITM, she found me and sat next to me on the plane. I knew then that this strange child was destined to succeed and Remember to discuss entrepreneurship with her.I thought we had lost her to IIM. […] I lost touch after that. But it’s no surprise that she founded and drives Sugar Cosmetics today. Her story sums up the struggle entrepreneurs must go through. “
Singh completed her electrical engineering studies at IIT-M and obtained her bachelor’s degree in 2005. She then obtained her MBA degree from Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad) in 2007. During her MBA, she was at Deutsche Bank in 2006 and turned down a job offer from the company despite the annual salary of Rs 1 crore. Singh and another graduate who turned down the same offer hope to start their own lingerie business based on their research. However, the desire to create a consumer brand for women was not realized due to the inability to raise the required funds.
Vinita Singer’s career
In 2007, Singh founded her first startup, Quetzal. However, the idea of offering background verification checks to recruiters has failed to pan out in this very cost-driven market. In 2012, she launched her second startup, Fab-Bag, a subscription platform that offers monthly beauty product deliveries. Her third start-up, Sugar Cosmetics, was co-founded by Singh in 2015 with her husband. The company sells cosmetics and personal care products for the Indian market. In an interview with the BBC, Singh described how her recruitment strategy is closely tied to marketing, as the many young Indian women she works with create a company culture that is close to its target consumers. After striking a $50 million deal with private equity firm L Catterton, Singh described the company’s products as catering to women of color. In September 2022, Bollywood star Ranveer Singh invested an undisclosed amount to become a “brand evangelist” for Sugar Cosmetics.
Singh has appeared on the hard copy covers of business magazines such as Forbes India, Business Today and Business World. In a related cover story, Singh spoke to Forbes about her journey from failure to economic exponential growth as a female entrepreneur. She told Business Today that funding was once only available if her husband joined the company full-time, which she thought was sexist. In Businessworld, she shares her vision to change the narrative of India’s female workforce and “inspire young girls to dream big”.
